Learn about spearfishing from an expert that has been there and done it! Each day at our facility, you will learn about spearfishing tips, equipment, and more.
Spearfishing 101 workshop descriptions: Spearfishing is a fun and safe sport to learn about. If properly executed and learned, spearfishing can also be a very safe activity. The first step to becoming a successful and safe free diver is to be an experienced and highly competent freediver. Most people that go spearfishing in Maui rarely come up empty-handed, instead, they usually end up with a pretty decent kit bag full of some of the best equipment that they could own.

When in the water, the main piece of equipment that you will need is a wetsuit. If you're just starting out or just want to test the waters out, we recommend that you go with a two-piece wetsuit that either has straps for attaching to your boat or a chest wetsuit that you can put on while in the water. These two-piece suits are easier to put on and take off. When in the water, we recommend that you wear a wetsuit that is specifically designed to be worn in the ocean. These are breathable so that you won't get stinky gas as you breathe but still breathe just fine. To learn more about spearfishing, visit this page.

Once you have your wetsuit on, our next training item that you should take with you is an email list of reputable spearfishing companies that you can check out. When you are out there spearfishing, you will want to talk to locals and see what kind of fish they have caught themselves. Ask them what kind of tackle they use, and how experienced the employees are since this will make a big difference in the quality of the fish that you end up catching.

After you have acquired your wetsuit and talked to some locals, it's time to check out the types of spearfishing gear that you will need. Typically, when you buy a wetsuit or a chest wetsuit, they will include a set of weights to help you be heavier underwater. This is great, but it is also why you will want to start investing in some closed-cell foam wetsuits. These are made from a thick, closed-cell foam that is designed to conform to the shape of your body so that it doesn't end up bulging or leaking while you are in the water.

Your spearfishing wetsuit will also include flippers for good swimming motion, a knife, and extra lines to tie onto your spear. Depending on what type of game you are spearfishing, you may also want to get a gun to take notes so that you can keep track of where the fish are at any given moment. Some guns come with special features, and other types just record your catch for you to look back on later. You'll want to get protection for yourself as well, whether it is a helmet, a snorkel, or some other kind of protection. When you are underwater, you don't really want to think about anything but being comfortable, and this is one way that you can do without.
